Column ~ Serving Those in Need

There is nothing more basic then to serve those who need help. Christ speaks about this in the Gospel passages on more than one occasion and I will submit that it is at the heart of the Gospel to love ones neighbor as oneself.

In the Wednesday edition of the Southbridge Evening News there was a story about the Food Share Food Pantry here in Southbridge and how the food is running low. This food pantry serves our neighbors and they need our help. Scripture tells us that to those who have been given much, much will be required. It is time to step up and help out.

This past weekend, my church was host to Fr. Justin Matthews of a new Orthodox Service agency called FOCUS North America. FOCUS is an acronym for Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve. FOCUS seeks to serve those in need, by providing aid through partner programs, like the Community Meal we serve each month at St. Michael’s.

Poverty robs the poor of their human dignity. Our neighbor’s poverty here at home is a moral and social crisis that we have the responsibility to address. According to the most recent statistics, 15% of our neighbors in Southbridge live below the Federal Poverty Limit. These are not street homeless but the working poor. Not in some far off city, but right here in our town and in our neighborhoods. These are our neighbors.

Faced with low wages and rising food, housing, utility, and health care costs, thousands of children go to bed hungry each night, some of those right here in our own town. In a land where resources as so plentiful, it is unacceptable that so many children, adults, and senior citizens, our most vulnerable population, experience such staggering need and insecurity.

Restoring their dignity takes more than handouts. Together we are working to restore these “living icons” one at a time. As Christians we are called to see Jesus in each person we come in contact with. We are to see Jesus in the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the sick, as well as the rich and well off. We are, all of us, created in the image and likeness of God and all of us are “living icons” of the Father here on Earth.

Mother Maria Skobtsova also known as St. Maria of Paris said, “There is no doubt that the Christian is called to social work,” she said, “called to organize a better life for the workers, to provide for the old, to build hospitals, care for the children, fight against exploitation, injustice, want, lawlessness.” She went on to say that this kind of Christian social work can only be based on love for our neighbors, not for career or material advancement, reminding us that we will be held accountable in the Last Judgment for our treatment of the hungry, imprisoned, naked and sick.

There is a great need. There is a great need no further away then your next door neighbor. We need to serve those in need because Christ commanded us too, but also because it is the right thing to do.

We are about to enter the holiday season when we will celebrate all that we have been given. How about giving to those who will be unable to celebrate right here in our own community. Many are called but few are chosen. Time to step up and help out.

Column ~ Is Sunday Just Another Day?

Years ago, the Reverend William Sloan Coffin preached a sermon called “In Praise of Rest” about the importance to our spiritual well being of taking time off from all labor. The Hebrew Scriptures tell us to keep holy the Sabbath Day. In Scotland after the Protestant Reformation a law was passed called Sabbatarianism which insisted that shops be closed and the train would not run on Sunday, and here in Massachusetts, in recent memory, we had a thing called the “Blue Laws.” Only the local store was allowed to be open and all others closed. These are extreme positions that just would not work in our time. Our lives have changed and many of us simply have no time for “Holy Leisure” that is restorative not only for our souls but also restorative for our physical and psychological well being.

Our culture runs 24/7 aided and sometimes controlled by gadgets that consume all of our moments even the rare private moments that we might have. For example, in the time it has taken me to write this column, I have paused five times because my Blackberry beeped that I had a message! Bob Herbert, in a July 16th 2010 New York Times Op/Ed writes, “Enough already with this hyper-active behavior, this techno-tyranny and non-stop freneticism. We need to slow down and take a deep breath.” Never a truer statement has been written

Each year the Massachusetts Council of Churches sponsors a program called “Take Back Your Time” and encourages all of us to do just that. This year the day will be held on Sunday, October 24th. This would be a great time to modify our behavior and spend sometime in Holy Rest. Of course I would suggest attending Church but I will leave that decision up to you and your family.

The idea behind this day is to power down and to relax. Turn off all your gadgets, dare I say to include the television, and just relax, read a book, go for a walk, or maybe, this is going to be a very crazy suggestion, talk to your family! Those of you who know me know that I need to practice this as well and I hope to try as best I can to do this on this day. If you cannot power down on the 24th consider picking another day. Perhaps Sunday is a day that you normally have to work, if that is the case; pick another day to use as your “power down” day. The point is we just need to do it.

This past New Years, I made a resolution to take a day that would be technology free. I have done better than I thought I would and have been able to spend some time without any technology to include my beloved Blackberry. I have noticed that I was a much calmer person during and after this day. I will continue to try and keep this up as time goes on.

In December of 2009 it was reported that 286 million cell phone subscribers sent 152.7 billion text messages per month for an average of 534 messages per subscriber. That is a tremendous amount of communication. I wonder how many of those text massages were so important that it could not wait until you were face to face. I am sure I am way above the average number of messages sent each month!

We all rely on technology and it is very difficult for many of us to be able to shut off the technology but believe me you will be a much happier person if you could just try. Take one day this month and do just that. Leave the phone at home, shut off the email, and just go and do something that you have always wanted to do. You will notice that your soul will be at rest and your head will clear, and if you are like me, your thumbs will get less of a work out from sending all those text messages.

On October 24th take a break and take back your time.

Column ~ Freedom and our Moral Responsibilities

For the last few weeks much has been said on the topic of freedom. We have heard about freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of expression. The last few weeks the debate on freedom has gone full tilt. I am not sure if it is because of the proposed Islamic Center in New York, the suggested Koran burning in Florida or the 9th anniversary of the horrible events of September 11, 2001. It seems everyone is talking about freedom.

People came to the new world for freedom. They were leaving England and the Netherlands and other places in Europe and coming to the new world so they could practice their faith unmolested. On June 1, 1660 Mary Dyer was hanged in the Massachusetts colony for being a Quaker. You see it was illegal in the Massachusetts Colony to be a Quaker in 1660. So much for religious freedom. Her statue is the one in front of the Massachusetts State house in Boston.

We Americans have more freedoms than most people that inhabit this world that we live in. For example, the citizens of Great Britain do not share the same freedom of speech that we have, and in some places people are not free to worship the way the feel led or have freedom of the press. America is truly blessed in the sense that we have been given these freedoms. But freedom is not free and come with a great price.

With the freedoms we have been given we also have a moral responsibility to use those freedoms for the common good. St. Paul tells us in the first letter to the Corinthians, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” (1Corinthians 10:23) In other words just because you can do something does not mean you should.

But do we have ultimate freedom? Can we say and do whatever we want whenever we want? The short answer is no. There is an old axiom that I heard somewhere, I wish I could remember where I heard this. It goes something like, my right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins. I can swing my first all I want but if I hit you, then I have infringed on your freedom to not have your nose hit. So freedom is not absolute in anyway. Another example, I cannot yell fire in a movie theater, unless of course there is a fire. I can yell it, but there will be consequences if I do. With freedom comes responsibility and this responsibility is great and we need to use it wisely.

Back to St. Paul for a moment. In the quotation I used above, St. Paul is saying that if what I want to do is not helpful or it does not edify then I should not do it. To illustrate the point consider the burning of books. Do I have the right to gather up books and burn them? Yes I do. If I get the proper permits from the town I live in then I may burn the books. But what if my burning of the books causes a riot and people are harmed by my action? Using St. Paul as the example then I should not burn those books because it is not edifying. So you see there is a great responsibility here. Yes I can do it, but I really should not.

If there is one thing that has made this country great that is the freedom of speech. The opposition to an idea is what leads to debate and further education on the issue. The loan voice crying in the wilderness has lead to some of the best ideas that we have today. People have been laying down their lives for this freedom for as long, if not longer, than we have been a country. However the most important part of that freedom is the responsibility that goes along with it.
